Long-term care is one of the most care-intense settings in US healthcare. It's also where staffing pressure is unusually severe, which amplifies the harm of administrative burden. Nursing and residential care facility employment fell 12.1% from January 2020 to January 2022. Skilled nursing facilities were still 7.3% below pre-pandemic levels by mid-2024. Over half of nursing homes report limiting new admissions due to staffing shortages.
Where staffing is most strained, every minute of documentation friction hits care quality hardest. Nurses are the core of human-centered care. But they spend hours every shift on paperwork instead of patients. DONs chase corrections. MDS coordinators race against deadlines. Administrators scramble before surveys.
Guardoc started by tackling the hardest version of this problem in SNFs. Documentation is simultaneously the source of truth for continuity of care, the basis for regulatory compliance, the foundation for legal defensibility, and the driver of reimbursement integrity. We found strong product-market fit quickly, with demand outpacing execution, because when you remove the documentation bottleneck, everything downstream improves: care quality, compliance posture, financial performance, and staff morale.
